To the Editor:
Following 20-as well as Island winters, I will tell you that there is a good deal a lot more winter season traffic than even 5 several years in the past. This is creating better dangers for pedestrians and automobiles coming into or crossing the south end Boulevard.
Just one response to this was the 5-7 days extension of “red light season” into October a several many years ago. Now we are seeing the return of the 28th Street mild in Ship Base. For safety, I truly feel that the lights could be turned on a few weeks before in the spring, and there are several destinations that could use a visitors mild for eight or 10 months of the yr: Ship Base, Acme, the Terrace and Bay Village, for example. However, no calendar year-spherical islander needs all of the lights to be on in the wintertime!
The trouble is basic safety. A few lights “on” get missing in a sea of blinking yellow vehicles run them or rear-close automobiles stopped at the light. This transpired repeatedly at the 28th Street mild in Ship Base all through the several years it was the only south stop light. Ship Base borough wants to perform with the county (the Boulevard is a county road) to warn drivers when the 28th Road light is pink by applying strobe lights or a flashing progress warning when the light-weight is purple. We have them for pedestrian crossings on the north conclude – why not for off-season lights on the south finish?
A handful of traffic lights can have a stunning impact on men and women and motor vehicles properly crossing the highway, by bunching the targeted traffic into “packs,” with distinct sections of highway in amongst that permit cross website traffic.
