“I want to make sure that my mentee is as comfortable as possible when she spends time at my home. She leaves some things here because there are several young children in the home where she is placed, so we have cleared a table with a drawer where she can leave things if she wants to. And now that the weather is getting colder, everyone needs slippers, so I got these for her (she loves cats), and she keeps them here. She puts them on as soon as she arrives, and in between our get-togethers, it brings a smile to my face to see them waiting there for her. She knows that my home is another place where she is seen and valued and where we want her to feel at home.”
NJ Dare to Dream Mentor
The heart of the Dare to Dream program is to walk alongside youth as they navigate through life’s challenges. The youth in our Dare to Dream program need the wisdom, advice, encouragement, and community that mentors can provide. Mentors meet practical and emotional needs as well as provide guidance through developmental milestones. The goal is for youth to be engaged and to feel supported and equipped to navigate life. A mentor commits to meeting with the youth every other week to set goals and help them achieve their dreams. Hopefully, these relationships will last a lifetime, but the program is a year commitment. Mentors matched with a high school student are strongly encouraged to stay with the youth until high school graduation.
We tell mentors that the simple act of telling their youth, “I believe in you,” “You are special,” and “You are going to do great things” can change their path completely.
YOU could make a difference in the life of a child.
