K9C Sinbad (1937 – 1951)
.
Combat veteran with 11 years of sea time.
.
Adopted by the crew of CGC CAMPBELL, he was officially enlisted with issued uniform, bunk, service record, and rank of Dog, 1st Class. He was as much a crewmember as any other, even getting into trouble during port calls and subjected to Captain’s Mast. In 1943, a convoy the CAMPBELL was escorting came under attack by German Wolf Pack U-boats. The crew, with him ever present on deck, damaged several U-boats, ultimately forcing the crew of U-606 to abandon ship. While rescuing the German survivors, the CAMPBELL’s crew noted extensive damage to their own ship from ramming the U-boat. Being towed back to port, only a small crew stayed onboard the CAMPBELL to keep her afloat. He remained onboard with them, as his good luck kept the cutter safe for his entire tenure. After 11 years at sea, he transferred to Barnegat Light Small Boat Station. He was buried with honors beneath the station’s flagpole.
