“TANKER SUNK OFF BARNEGAT LIGHT!”

Eighty Years Ago, Today – (Tuesday) March 10th, 1942, right on the Jersey Shore:

New Jersey gets another gruesome calling card from the Kriegsmarine…

The American tanker “SS Gulftrade,” carrying 80,000 barrels of Bunker C fuel oil is blown clean in two by U-588, a Type VIIC, just a few miles off of Long Beach Island.

She burns fiercly; her bow sinks. Her stern section is seen here, floating off – with men still trapped on it.

Full details of this incredible, brazen attack will be posted later this evening.

Stay ‘tooned!
