Wonderful Wren✨

Time for more Latin/ Greek!
The boisterous Carolina Wren is a small songbird that favor the tangled undergrowth of many types of forests. Their scientific name is Thryothorus ludovicianus- so let’s break that down.

Thryon is Greek for “Rush” or “Reed”, referring to the plants. Thourus, also Greek, means to “hop” or to “jump at”. Together, the genus name means “Reed Hopper”. The species name is a little complicated, but Ludovicianus ultimately means “of Louisiana”.

So, the Carolina Wren’s scientific name means “Reed Hopper of Louisiana”!
