Sandrea and Me

To the Editor:
Thank you, Gina Scala, for the report about Sandy Medford (“One 12 months Later, Relatives Ties Aid to Recover Broken Hearts,” 3/10). She was my close friend for in excess of 50 yrs. I liked her family like my have, and I think she would want us to shift forward jointly.
I can nevertheless hear her standing around my shoulder from upcoming door indicating, “Yooooohooooo, Jackie!? Where’s Stacy!?” and the children would operate throughout to our dwelling to play with the puppy who lay in the sand beneath the property. Beth and Brian would roll all-around with him. I would explain to Sandy to occur in excess of. (In the summertime my spouse, Stacy, would run the lawnmower amongst our homes so we wouldn’t have to navigate the weeds.)
Sandy loved anyone. She judged no just one. Everyone talked to Sandy. All people loved Sandy. Everyone confided in Sandy. Sandy produced you sense as if you have been the most significant, and the most stunning, individual on earth. Her mom, Anne, was like that, way too. “Hon,” Anne would say, “you search stunning!”
We had been all established to stroll on the seaside when summer time arrived, no subject how extensive it took us. Neither a person of us could walk also swiftly. We’d trip about our ft, we’d glimpse like hell in bathing satisfies, and we did not treatment. When we got to the seaside, we were going to plop our beach front chairs down on the sand at low tide and hold out for the tide to come in. Then we were heading to giggle hysterically while we had been swept absent. We would laugh so hard we would – appear on, you know what I mean.
And we were loud!  They could hear us laughing on Central Avenue. Our sides break up. My belly ached. We laughed until finally the time would appear when we had to get out. How the heck would we do that? There was only a single way. On our knees! We’d crawl out if we experienced to, just to get back to the home and have 1 a lot more glass of wine.
One particular more memory. One additional walk in the course of dawn. Sandy manufactured all the plans, but who experienced to wake her at dawn? Me!
We’d go to Holgate, gather shells and get breakfast. Two women need nourishment. And we’d deliver property our treasures, wanting to know what the heck we ended up going to do with the stinky shells.
A life span handed. Then COVID strike.
The two Sandy and I wound up in the medical center at the same time. I didn’t know for months right after I obtained out of the hospital that my finest buddy hadn’t produced it. “I’m 90 years previous,” I believed. “How is that achievable?” I realized Sandy experienced health issues we talked about them all the time. We talked each individual day. I was asking, “How is Sandy?” even though Sandy was concerned about me: “How is Jackie?” We experienced a relationship and I believe that we even now do. Sandy was spouse and children.
Quickly right after I shed my greatest mate, my son-in-law’s brother died. He died alone in a clinic bed. No a person picked him up for a thirty day period. The fallout has been staggering. Hundreds of hundreds of people today have died. No a single is to blame. We need to stick alongside one another, be strong together, and last but not least say, in the name of Sandy, yooooohooooo!!!
